How to Get the Best Deals on Airfare

Thinking of taking a vacation but dreading dropping a ton of money on a airplane ticket? Airfare can be somewhat unpredictable but with some strategy and extra research, you can find the best deal on your ticket.

Check multiple sites:

It’s important to not only check the airlines’ websites but to also check travel sites like Kayak or Expedia. For example, travel sites like Kayak are usually pretty reliable but they do not list every single airline provider. Southwest Airlines often has great deals but they are not advertised on any other travel site, so you have to visit their website to check for special pricing.

Pick the right time:

Timing is everything when it comes to buying airfare. If you’re willing to risk it, sometimes you can get a great last minute deal but that’s never guaranteed and you’ll often have to pay more. Most experts say you will typically get the best deals 6-8 weeks before your departure date. Most discounts are offered at the beginning of the week, usually Monday thru Wednesday. It’s a good idea to start checking prices 10 weeks out and then make your purchase no later than 6 weeks before.

Check websites at least once a day:

Airfare prices can change up to 3 times a day so it’s important to check prices as many times as you can. It may fill up your inbox, but you can set price alerts at travel sites that will notify you by email every time the prices change.

Be flexible:

Having flexible travel dates will often save you money. Avoid flying right around the holidays if you can and don’t fly on Sundays. Sometimes this is unavoidable but if you have flexible travel dates, you could end up saving enough money for another night at a hotel!
